The artist then recounts his misadventures in Paris where, painting meanwhile, he attempts to turn a ramshackle bistro into a smart café with the help of a famous restaurateur and a few clochards. It is in Ville d'Avray, in an old ruin converted into a studio, that Mr. Bemelmans suffers the initial despairs and frustrations of a painting in oils. His success in the medium is attested to by the many color reproductions in this book.
