This lush still life pastel is by Phyllis Plattner (1940-2022), a noted artist who lived in the Washington, DC area. It is a work of light and shadow and reflection, composed of rich saturated colors painted with many fine strokes. The painting measures 26.5” x 43.5” (30” x 47” framed.) It is composed of oil pastel on three sheets of paper. It is framed in a simple wood frame with Plexiglas, appropriate for the painting. The painting and frame are in very good condition. It is signed and dated in the lower right, Plattner ‘87” on the far right sheet. The left sheet and center sheet are initialed. On the reverse is a gallery label from the Elaine Horwitch Gallery of Santa Fe, Palm Springs and Scottsdale. It bears the title “Plums #6.”
Phyllis Plattner began her art studies at the new York’s High School of Music and Art where she was exposed to like-minded students from all over the city who all shared the same passions; she continued studying painting at Bennington College in Vermont where she received her BA and at Claremont Graduate School in Claremont, California where she received her MFA. She then taught at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD.
Plattner exhibited her work in cities throughout this country including New York, Chicago, Baltimore, Washington, DC, St. Louis, Santa Fe, Los Angeles among others, as well as in colleges and universities across the country, and in Paris, Florence, and Brittany, France. She was also a guest lecturer in art schools, universities, and museums, including RISD in Rhode Island, Columbia College of Design in Chicago, New York University and Columbia University in New York, Temple University, Rome, the St. Louis Art Museum, and the Corcoran Gallery in DC. Grants and honors she received include a National Endowment for the Arts/Mid-Atlantic Fellowship, several Maryland State Arts Council grants, and many faculty development grants from the schools at which she taught. less
