Mid 19th century hand colored engraving titled "Fores's Series of the Mothers - Plate 3 - Duck and Ducklings" - Published May 19th 1854 by Messrs Fores, London - Painted by J.F. Herring , Sr - Engrabed by J. Harris. Beveled wood frame; white mat with painted detail.
John Frederick Herring Sr. (12 September 1795 – 23 September 1865), also known as John Frederick Herring I, was a painter, sign maker and coachman in Victorian England. He painted the 1848 "Pharoah's Chariot Horses". He amended his signature "SR" (senior) in 1836, with the growing fame of his teenage son (1 of 4) John Frederick Herring Jr.
John Harris III (circa 1811-1865) was an engraver working in the 19th century. He reproduced the works of many popular animal and sporting artists of the time. He also executed some military scenes. There is some debate over Harris’ origins. Some evidence seems to suggest that he is the son of watercolorist and illustrator John Harris II (1767-1832). However, the alternating dates of his lifespan also suggest he might have been the son of a cabinet maker. What is known, however, is that Harris worked his whole life in London and that the prints he produced are of the finest execution and skill. Harris would often translate the works of the prominent animal and sporting artists of the time such as John Frederick Herring Snr (1795-1865), Henry Alken (1785-1851), and James Pollard (1792-1867).
