A brilliantly executed, large and characterful mid-century abstract nude figurative portrait composition, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1964.
The painting presents a seated female figure, rendered in expressive brushstrokes. Abstract in nature, the figure has been skilfully deconstructed into blocks of contrasting pastel shades, evoking a harmonious yet fragmented human form. Set against a backdrop of deep blues and greens with hints of earthy browns, the figure contrasts vividly with the surrounding darker tones.
By leaving areas of the canvas exposed, the artist’s creative use of negative space accentuates the form of the figure. drawing our attention to her distinct presence.
