Ship name plaques were originally placed on the stern and along the quarter panel of the bow of a ship. The name comes from the early 1800s maritime law that required each ship to be identified with a quarterboard bearing its name. Many of the ship quarterboards were removed and displayed on houses, thus beginning the tradition of naming seaside homes. Circa 2010.
