Deborah Freedman is a painter and printmaker whose work explores the relationship between nature and painting. She examines the structure and force of nature, while also noting the gestural brushstrokes she uses. The relationship between the two expresses an emotive interpretation of the physical force of nature. Over the past twenty five years, she has made a series of paintings based upon the reservoir located near her home in the Hudson Valley. She relates the reservoir to political and worldly events and catastrophes. She takes the dreamlike state of the nature scene and distorts it to be unsettling and threatened. She has created works centering around this muse through events such as 9/11, Hurricane Irene, COVID and the Israel/Palestine war.
Freedman studied painting and printmaking at New York University. She is the co-owner of VanDeb Editions Inc, a printmaking studio, with Marjorie VanDyke. Freedman’s work is included in many collections including, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The New York Public Library, The Library of Congress, The Department of State, Rutgers University and The Hess Collection. less
