He was a visual artist and poet.
His work includes prints, watercolors, paintings, illustrations, caricatures and poems.
Roger Descombes is the son of the very young Cécile and lives with her in Paris from 1919. It was not until the age of twelve that he was able to exhibit sixty of his landscape watercolors in a traveling exhibition. In 1929, he received the “Prix Conte” for drawing in Paris.
from 1933 to 1933, he worked as a cartoonist for various Parisian newspapers. Several drawing prizes allowed him to take drawing courses at the École des Beaux-Arts. He also worked as an illustrator for Comédia and L'Avant-Scène. In 1934, he was in Barcelona and designed the decoration of the casino.
from 1936 to 1940 he studied at the Glasgow School of Art and graduated with a diploma. He then trained as a drawing teacher from 1940 to 1943. He was also chief illustrator at Vogue in London from 1940 to 1945 and worked with the photographer Lee Miller and the illustrator Carl Erickson (1891-1958). In England he had contact with other artists, including the sculptor Jacob Epstein and also met his future wife June there. Descombes was often the guest of the Duke and Duchess of Argyle, who each invited him to spend the weekend at their castle in Scotland.
from 1946 to 1953 Descombes worked for Vogue in Paris and designed for the magazines L'Officiel de la Couture and for the newspaper France-Soir. After the Second World War, he returned to Switzerland and lived alternately in Switzerland, France and Spain.
