Pair of boat-shaped vases from the altoviti family furnace 20th century renaissance boat-shaped terracotta vase large, stunning renaissance vase from the altoviti family of florence. The altoviti family owned the "fornace la chiocciola" which operated in rignano sull'arco for more than 400 consecutive years. Shape owned by us. Terracotta from impruneta (florence). Height 56 cm width 44 cm length 82 cm weight 22 kg manufacture tuscan material terracotta our model is based on a specimen handed down from the "manifattura di signa" owned by the bondi brothers, which closed at the beginning of the fascist era. The altoviti family is one of the oldest noble families in florence. The origins of the family are uncertain and have been the subject of controversy among scholars. In some excavations in the fiesole countryside, a roman epigraph was found (judged a fake by passerini) which mentions a "furio cammillo altovita", nephew of furio camillo, so the future pope enea silvio piccolomini (the future pius ii) hypothesized that the altoviti family even had roman origins. Others have based their origins on the coat of arms, with the flayed wolf, to trace it back to a certain longobardo di corbizzo, who in 1192 lived in borgo santi apostoli and had seven children, one of whom was called altovita: the latter could be the founder of the family and was armed by emperor frederick ii, perhaps with the emblem of the wolf that symbolized daring captains. Others instead connect the origin of the family with that of the squarcialupi. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
