Lovely antique French plate rack from the 19thC. Probably the upper piece of a vaisselier or deux corps china cabinet; which would be known as a "hutch" in the States or a "buffet" in the UK.
Perfect to place on a countertop for the European unfitted kitchen aesthetic, on a small farm table or sideboard in the dining room, or as a freestanding piece anywhere in the home where attractive, additional storage is needed. Due to the abundant clearance height between shelves, could accommodate books or wine / liquor bottles.
Appears to be of hand hewn hardwood, with a handsome spindle and carved rail gallery. Attractive blue & white padded designer fabric has been added to finish off the back. En verso, period-appropriate secondary species wood planks which may or may not be original to the piece. No maker's marks.
