Large, vintage 1980s, classic Sergio Bustamante, mixed metal Toucan Sculpture with hanging Perch. This artisan hand-crafted toucan is made of individually cut and placed "feathers" of brass, copper and aluminum on its body, cast brass claw feet, a beak of sheet brass and sheet copper and aluminum-trimmed glass eyes. Sergio Bustamante is known for his witty and original designs, many of which were produced in "The Family Workshop Studio" in Tlaquepaque, Jalisco, Mexico (see NOTES below for background on Sergio Bustamante). This wonderful bird measures 25 1/4" long, and has 5 1/4" body diameter. The brass wrapped, circular perch with top ring measures 17 3/8" in diameter with the top ring of 1 1/8" diameter. The ring includes a newer metal chain for hanging, which is not original to the piece. This stunning sculpture is like jewelry for any room and the wit and character of the toucan brings a smile.
Notes on Sergio Bustamante:
Bustamante was born in 1942 in Jalisco, Mexico. A strong creative already at an early age started him in studying architecture at the University of Guadalajara, where he discovered his interest in ceramics and fine art. HE left the university before finishing his degree to focus on craftmaking and fine arts, starting with painting and sculpting in paper mache. He had his first exhibit in 1966 in Mexico City. In 1970, he moved to Amsterdam to continue his work and study of art and returned to Tlaquepaque, Jalisco in 1975, opening "The Family Workshop Studio" where he began to produce sculptures in wood and metal with animal themes. By 1979, he added furniture in wood with brass accents. In the early 1980s, with the support and work of various artisans, Bustamante produced more metal animal-themed objects and introduced colored ceramic pieces. In 1992, jewelry in bronze, silver and gold with semiprecious stones and his classic animal themes was added to his extensive offerings. With the work of 300 skilled artisans, Bustmante continues to design and produce works. His whimsical and surrealistic works are extensively collected by individuals and galleries around the world and have become more and more valuable over time. less
