This is a beautiful and useful early 20th century Korean storage cabinet called "sam chung jang" (or 3 leveled cabinet). … more This is a beautiful and useful early 20th century Korean storage cabinet called "sam chung jang" (or 3 leveled cabinet). This type of cabinet was used to store clothes, documents, and valuables, while folded blankets would be placed on top during the day.

The cabinet is made of solid elm wood, accented with burl wood panels and ornate brass hardware, mounted on a sled style base. The cabinet features a top row of 3 small drawers above 2 levels of storage compartments fitted with double doors. The paneled doors open to reveal a spacious space compartments lined with rice paper printed with Korean characters.

The bottom tier has 2 sets of smaller double doors. The left doors enclose an unusual hinged flap that folds down half way to reveal a storage space. This type of hinged opening is commonly used on Korean blanket chests called bandaji, literally meaning "half closing." The right doors enclose a case of 3 small drawers.

The cabinet is lavishly adorned with brass hardware, including corner fittings, petal-shaped hinges, and large lock plates with a cut-out coin design. Remarkably, all 4 original brass fish-form locks are intact, along with the original brass key, accented with a double tassel.

The early 20th century era cabinet is in very good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. There are some scratches on the doors, as well as veneer crackle lines on the burl wood panels. The brass hardware has some patina. Overall, the cabinet has been very well preserved and functions perfectly. Please see photos for more details on condition.
