Intricate Small Luxurious Vintage Hunting Scene Design Silk Persian Qum Rug, country of origin: Persian Rugs, Circa date: Vintage – Qum hunting rugs are favorites, and this vintage piece features beautiful colors that are perfect for bringing a touch of color to a neutral space. Qum is an ancient city, but it only recently entered into the production of rugs. The weavers of Qum first began creating these beautiful pieces in the 1930s, at which time other cities had a rug industry that was hundreds of years old.
Qum set itself apart by using silk as the weft and by its beautiful designs with high levels of detail. This allowed them to create beautiful pictorials in gorgeous colors. The hunting rugs of Qum also have a fascinating story and symbolism behind them.
Qum hunting rugs were inspired by the hunting tapestries of King Henry VI. These tapestries depicted English royalty during a successful hunt. The weaver of Qum drew inspiration from this concept and recreated these pieces using famous Persian rulers. The rugs often feature rulers in clothing from different periods.
Hunting rugs are often symbolic and tell a story that reflects Persian poetry and mythology. Persia was once home to over ten species of lion, many of which are now extinct. You can find many of these lions in Persian artwork as a symbol of power and strength. This rug depicts the fallow deer, which is a symbol of love and gentleness. The gazelle is a symbol of the power to overcome adversity. The horse is a symbol of a long life.
The hunters in this rug pursue their prey in a variety of ways. The figure in the bottom right is intent on capturing the female line with a lasso. This could be interpreted as capturing her strength. This is a gorgeous piece, especially when you look beyond the colors and design. It will make a beautiful addition to your home where it will be sure to be a conversation starter as you explore its many fascinating details.
