Set of four "Tulip" armchairs designed by Pierre Paulin manufactured by Artifort and distributed by Turner Ltd. in the late 1960's. These chairs look amazing in what is their original ruby red/magenta colored mohair-like fabric, which we are certain is the "Blossoms Time, Merry" fabric by Momentum. The Tulip chair's sculptural form is achieved through a sophisticated manufacturing process that involves shaping a foam-covered fiberglass shell and adding a plush cushion.
Good vintage condition with light to moderate vintage wear to fabric. Presents well in a vintage environment or can be reupholstered. Chairs were gently used around a Bielecky rattan gaming table also for sale on Chairish.
About the designer...
Paulin’s designs were fresh and innovative. His striking, brightly colored seating sculptures raised eyebrows at home and abroad. Right up to today, they are regarded as the face of the Artifort collection. To produce these designs, a new construction method was introduced in collaboration with Artifort’s development department. Artifort started to work with foam covered metal tube frames and stretch fabrics. In 1967 Paulin met Jack Lenor Larsen and together they formed a golden duo. In fact, they changed the way in which the world viewed design, in terms of form, materials and textiles. Now, forty years later, Artifort has resumed production of the fabric Momentum exclusively for Paulin’s designs. less
