A vintage reproduction print of antique Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, from his series, "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Road".
Fifty-Second Station: Kusatsu. In the title block: "The Stop for Local Specialties". A teahouse with the sign Uba-no-cha where several travelers are resting. On the right, four bearers are carrying a large box. In the middle, a lord's mail is carried by four men who are running as fast as possible. In this palanquin, the messenger, a samurai, is clinging to a rope to cushion the jolts of the hasty race.
This reproduction print is not a woodblock reproduction, but offset, full-color print. Detailed.
Comes from a rare art folio published by Editions du Credit Lyonnais in Paris, France, in 1960. Printed in France, on one side of high quality heavy paper. Blank back, numbered on the back: LIII.
Fair condition - minor edge wear, it was pinned in the past, two tiny holes very close to the top corners were smoothed and are barely visible; rip at the lower left corner; creases at the right side, closer to the edge; another crease starts at the left edge close to the top left corner, where it is visible on the front, and goes through the print and is visible on the back only Please see last 4 images for details); never framed.
