Metamorphic coffee tables are a rare breed. Finding this model by Emmaboda Mobler of Sweden, with all of its original components present, is a small miracle.
It transforms from an ordinary coffee table to a six-seater dining table, and can be further lengthened with the banquet extensions to reach just under 9 feet. The frame hides a pair of pull-out leaves that nearly double the table’s width when deployed.
The table is fully modular and can be assembled / disassembled without tools into its 7 component parts: the frame, the top surface, two pairs of legs, the rattan tray, and two banquet extensions with legs that fold in to minimize storage footprint.
With solid oak legs, teak surfaces on the coffee table, banquet extensions of baltic birch, and a rattan accent tray below, this table is a study in commonly used woods of the mid century modern period.
We acquired this table from an antiques dealer who, fortunately, worked formerly as an engineer. He found the components of the table stashed in different locations within the original owner’s house and, with his background as an engineer, managed to piece everything together. Most of these tables are missing the rattan tray and banquet extensions, making this one fantastically rare.
