Description: This leather bound book is a lovely treasure from the Edwardian era. Published the year of King Edward VII’s coronation … more This leather bound book is a lovely treasure from the Edwardian era. Published the year of King Edward VII’s coronation (1902), his coat of arms is embossed on the cover. The initials ER indicate Edward Rex (Latin for King). The publisher, Blackie & Son Limited holds a unique place in English history. Taking advantage of the 1870 Elementary Education Act which gave all children between the ages of 5 and 12 in England and Wales access to school. Blackie & Son published textbooks and finely printed reward books intended as prizes to pupils in day schools. This book is an example of the latter. The gift label on the inside cover is dated 1908 just two years before King Edward’s death in 1910. The label is addressed to the winning child and signed by the headmistress. Cleveland High School, presumably of Yorkshire, is embossed on the cover.
