Bring a Country French look to your house with this elegant confit pot from the Perigord, converted into a table lamp. Standing on painted wooden base, the lamp is hard wired and dressed with a custom shade. Made of earthenware, these traditional vessels were once used daily in the French country home for cooking, and have beautiful rustic glazes of green or yellow, and terracotta finish. Confit is the French word that means “to preserve”; the glazed pots were used for storing cooked meats and then buried in the ground or stored in stone-lined larders. This storage process preserved the cooked meat without refrigeration and could then be enjoyed throughout the winter months. The bottom halves were left un-glazed for burying in the ground since the glaze would normally fall off sealed in the ground. Meats, most often duck or goose, preserved in this method are often considered a delicacy (Confit d’oie or preserved goose and confit de canard or preserved duck). Custom shade and finial included.
