Sonia Thomsen was born on the 4 August of 1942 in Cañada de Gomez, Argentina. As a small child, her family moved to Campana, in the province of Buenos Aires, where she lived until she was a teenager when she began travelling to Buenos Aires to study the arts. She studied painting, drawing, sculpture and engraving in the "Escuela de Bellas Artes Manuel Belgrano", after which she specialized in drawing and painting in the "Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes Prilidiano Pueyrredón". Both schools are in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Sonia Thomsen has established herself as one of the most sought-after portrait artist in Argentina. Her painting style, from oil to pastel, draws heavily from her studies of the European masters. The magic of her portraits lies in her ability to capture her subjects in natural settings that communicate their personalities and emotions.
