An antique 9-step “kaidan” cabinet with 11 drawers and two large storage compartments. Has original handwrought hardware. Cabinet is in three sections. Fine Japanese craftmanship with original dove tail construction and hand forged drawer pulls.
One of the most striking examples of a Japanese Kaidan Dansu. Tremendous amount of storage.
In clean original condition, with a small hole to allow an electric cord to main section.
Crafted in three (3) sections for convenient portability. Has original lacquer finish.
Made of Keyaki wood (from Zelkova trees) and Paulownia wood.
Meiji period, circa 1860s-1890s.
Leave it to the Japanese master craftsman to create this amazing practical and useful storage combination.
Both the top section and the middle section have large opening compartments. The top sections has a large two door sliding section. This was carefully constructed so the individual sliding doors can be lifted up for removal. The middle section has a very large, 2 door swing out section.
Original handcrafted hardware, iron handles side and with the original, very unique door latch that requires two handcrafted pieces to be moved together.
The chest comes from the Fukui Prefecture, location is northeast of Kyoto. Included for provenance, is the receipt from 1985 when this “kaidan dansu” was initially removed from the house and sold as furniture.
