The oil was placed on a container, not included, inside the lamp but more recently candles were used. The lamp base is wood but the paper surrounding the lamp is vintage Japanese paper replacing the original paper of the lamp in the 1980s. Clear Japanese paper was used on the original lamp as shown in the photo from a Japanese design book. See less
