Description: João de Deus was a lyric poet who is credited with revitalizing Portuguese Romantic poetry. He was an important figure … more João de Deus was a lyric poet who is credited with revitalizing Portuguese Romantic poetry. He was an important figure in Portuguese literature. His collected works, Campo de Flores (“Field of Flowers”), were published in 1893; two years later he was publicly proclaimed the greatest Portuguese poet of his generation. Contributions to the anthology were made by Teófilo Braga, writer, playwright, politician and the leader of the Republican Provisional Government after the overthrow of King Manuel II, as well as the second elected president of the First Portuguese Republic.
