This platinum diamond ring is on the cusp of the Edwardian and Art Deco eras. The centerpiece of the ornate ring are three Peruzzi cut bezel set diamonds —one is an elongated rectangular shape, while the diamonds on either side are truncated, cut specifically for this ring. The larger diamonds are surrounded by a selection of 40 single and Old Mine Cut diamonds that are bead set into the ring. The ring has layers divided by milgrain work that tie together the lace-like patterns of the Edwardian era and the geometric designs of the Art Deco era in alternating bands. There is an added detail of a hand engraved scrolling foliate on each side of the ring. The ring has open work on the bottom that lets in the light and also reveals the triangular bottom shape of the diamonds—a nice touch that honors the beautiful intricacies of the Peruzzi cut stones.
What really makes this ring special are the Peruzzi cut diamonds, a rare cut of diamonds that are hard to find. The Peruzzi cut is known as the ancestor of the contemporary brilliant cut, invented by Vincent Peruzzi in the 17th century. The square stone has 33 facets (significantly more than the 8 facet cuts predominantly used at that time). The facets are geometric and have a hand cut look while also having the brilliant sparkle of the contemporary diamond cuts commonly used today. The facets make a distinguished X and the diamonds have open culets—we love that the geometric facets of the Peruzzi cuts mirror the geometry of the Art Deco pattens found in the rest of the ring.
The ring contains approximately 1 carat of natural antique diamonds. The central Peruzzi cut diamond is 5 x 3.3 mm; the two truncated Peruzzi cut diamonds are 2.1 - 3.3 mm x 3.5 mm. The other diamonds in the ring are Old Mine Cut and single cut and range in size from 1.5 mm to 2.25 mm.
The width of the face of the ring is 12.3 mm. The ring tapers down to a thin 1.3 mm band at its narrowest point. The ring face has a rise of 2.2 mm. The piece weighs 4.45 grams. Unmarked but acid tests as platinum.
Because of the delicate nature and age of this ring, there is a small patch repair on the back of the ring, very well done and not visible when worn. One of the tiniest diamonds on the side of the ring is a replacement diamond. You have to look at the ring under a loop to identify it and it does not detract from the beauty of the ring, but we thought it was worth noting these repairs.
