Late 1700’s Japanese byobu (folding screen) by world famous artist Tosa Mitsusada (1738-1806) Japan. Rare treasure of Japanese art history. Gorgeous ink, paint and gold leaf hand painted ancient screen depicts the famous 1,000 literary piece of “Genji Monogatari - Coach for the Royal Family”. The piece last sold at auction decades ago by Bullock’s Gallery, Wilshire. Screen consists of 6 panels (18.3” each) for a total length of 109.75 inches. It is approximately 43.25” in
height and just over .5” thick. Brilliant gold sets off the dark painted coach, tree and subjects beautifully. The hand painted scene stretches the front length and the back is covered in green paper. Each panel has a bottom and top brass clip (bottom ones not pictured). The top ones attach to a flat metal rod (2” thick) for hanging. Rod is included. Wood frame. Piece does have some condition issues (see notes below). But considering it’s over 200 years old, it’s in remarkable shape. NOTE: If shipping quote is overestimated, you will be refunded. less
