Right leather strap has been professionally repaired. Left cast metal foot bracket is missing and a replacement wheel has been affixed to the the underside. Right corner under the lid was hit at some point and is slightly crushed in though it is concealed when the lid is closed. The black mark down the back of the trunk appears to be an old burn scar, perhaps when an candle or lantern tipped over. Leather has been conditioned with Fiebing's Aussie Leather Conditioner. This produce contains beeswax and it gives the trunk a rich sheen and subtle shine. Just buff with an old t-shirt to increase the shine. less

Sole leather trunks were only made prior to 1910. Others of this style have been dated to the 1870s. These top-opening travel trunks were the type popular with travelers going west on stagecoaches and wagons and have been used as props in Western movies. Collected in Santa Fe, New Mexico. less
