Description: This pair of carved wood wall ornaments covered in genuine gold leaf is the epitome of elegance and refinement. I … more This pair of carved wood wall ornaments covered in genuine gold leaf is the epitome of elegance and refinement. I love all things gilded, especially when placed in a red setting as in the scarlet room showcasing these gilded treasures in the last picture. The flourishes that abound in these carvings are acanthus leaves, a decorative motif that was used extensively in 18th Century France. If you look carefully, you will see where the pieces of wood were joined together to create the desired length of each ornament. Some of the gilding is worn in places, and the very tip of one of the ornaments (shown in picture 5) is worn down to the bare wood. The style of the pair is undeniably Louis XV, but they date to the early part of the 20th Century, still making them at least 100 years old.

Each wall ornament measures 21 1/2" (54.7 cm) in length and 13 3/4" (35 cm) in width at the widest point. The width at the top from flourish to flourish is 10 1/2" (26.7 cm). They both have the necessary hardware attached for hanging, a wire on one and a metal hook on the other.

I included the final picture just to give you an idea of how to display these fabulous pieces. The gilt mirror that they flank is from the Régence period in France (1715-1723) and is part of my personal collection. less
