The distinctive look of these French chairs, which date to circa 1940, is in the style of Charles Dudouyt. Dudouyt (1885-1946) was a French woodworker whose designs incorporated minimal carvings and natural materials. These particular chairs were hand-carved from beech, with lattice-like woven seats. Most of the rails and stretcher connectors are cylindrical, except for the two backrest rails, which are flattened with arching tops. All four legs have been carved with a few protruding rings, with the back legs rising higher. Our Dudouyt-style low chairs would make intriguing seating for an entry hall, landing, or library. less
