A hallmark of Louis XIII-style furniture is highly turned wood, as evidenced by the legs of this amazing French writing table. Hand-carved in oak during the 1800s, the dark brown patina of the base accentuates the wonderful carvings.
The roughly rectangular top is adorned with a thin, recessed molding that traverses the entire table, including the protruding spherical corners that align over the legs. Directly below the nodules are winged cherub mascarons flanked by a pair of scrolls. One side of the apron has a belt drawer, providing ample storage space.
Each leg terminates in a bulbous joinery, embellished with large rosettes. Beneath each joinery is an onion foot with a carved recession. The legs are supported by an H-stretcher, also featuring well-carved elements, including more barley twists and rosette ends. A pair of turned spindles also arise from the side joineries, mirrored by identical drop-down noix that extend from the underside of the table. Our beautiful Louis XIII-style writing table would make a wonderful addition to a study, library, or office.
