Raffaele De Grada in 1885 and died in 1957 in Milan is a contemporary Italian painter of the Novecento pictorial movement.
Son of the painter Antonio and Teresa Amelotti, with whom he went to Argentina in 1888 then to Switzerland in 1889, he helped his father with his decoration work. Between 1902 and 1905, he attended the academies of Dresden and Karlsruhe.
Around 1913, he moved to Zurich where he exhibited, he traveled frequently in Italy and there he met Magda Ceccarelli who became his wife in 1915. The following year his son Raffaele was born in Zurich.
He is interested in landscape painting, for which he seeks new solutions linked to nature and his state of mind.
In 1918 he decided to settle permanently in Italy. In 1920 he lived in San Gimignano where his daughter Lydie was born. He then leaves for Settignano near Florence.
His first Italian exhibition dates back to 1921 at the Palazzo Antinori in Florence, and it attracted the attention of critics and the Florentine artistic community.
In 1922 he moved to Giramenti, near Arcetri, the same year he participated in the Venice Biennale where he returned in the following years.
In 1926 he participated in the first exhibition of the Novecento (pictorial movement) in Milan. In 1928 he exhibited at the Venice Biennale. In 1929 he took part in the second Novecento exhibition at the Permanente in Milan.
In 1929 he moved to Milan and in 1931 he was called to teach at the ISIA in Monza.
He continues to dedicate himself to the landscape. That of the Milanese surroundings, Brianza and Tuscany, confronting the painting of Corot and Cezanne.
He died in Milan in 1957. Original frame
