Black-tailed Hare from the first volume of the octavo edition of Audubon's “Quadrupeds of North America”.
John James Audubon (1765-1851), after coming to America around 1803 became a noted naturalist and artist. His most well known work, The Birds of America, was produced between 1826-1838 and sold by subscription. The folio edition of The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, was published and sold by subscription from 1845-1848. The first publication of the octavo edition of Vol. 1 was in part published in 1849 by Nagel & Weingaertner, New York, which included "pair of Grey Rabbits and offspring." The publication of half of Vol. 1, and all of Vols. 2 & 3 of the first, second, and third editions were transferred by Audubon's sons to Bowen, Philadelphia, and published between 1849-56.
