Wonderful vintage electrified railroad brakeman's lantern marked NYCS manufactured by the R. E. Dietz Company for the New York Central System. Great for the cabin, playhouse or glamping tent, or for your collection! Wire cage and stand holds clear glass globe with raised lettering Dietz in an oval with Vesta New York underneath on one side and N.Y.C.S. under the letter C with NX inside it on the other side. The top of the gas cap reads Dietz Vesta in an oval with New York USA and stars embossed in a circle around the oval. The flange has N.Y.C.S. embossed on the outside edge and multiple patented dates with the last one appearing to read S (for Syracuse) 2-50 (February 1950 manufacturing date). The top is opens via a small metal latch. The lantern has been electrified with a rotary cord switch and currently has a 40w candle flame bulb. It works!
The lantern design provided a "cold blast" through air circulated by the flanking tubes. This design provided a stronger flame and was functionally very effective.
Measures approximately 6 1/2" w at the base x 6 1/2" d x 10" h (without handle) and 15 1/4" h (with handle). Globe measures approximately 3 1/2" w x 3 1/2" d x 4 1/4" h, with inside top measuring approximately 2 1/4" round and bottom 2 7/8" round. Please see photos for detail and condition.
