Direct from France, one of two highly carved antique prayer kneelers (or “prie dieu”) from our most recent container.
The stunning panel back here features a hand carving of a Catholic cardinal, wearing period dress and a Papal tiara – supposedly it is Saint Gregory, with a tall Patriarchal Cross in his hand, a dove representing the Holy Ghost, and a carved village/church scene in the background.
Additional full-length carvings on either side include dimensionally carved characters and scrolls. The slanted lower kneeler has a lift top for Bible storage inside, with carved beveled edges and large, carved paw feet on each side. Rare and hard to find; well-built and hand carved by craftsmen of the period, circa1880.
Measurements: 38.25” ht. x 25” x 16.5”.
