Surplus canvas and fabrics are sewn together and stretched over reused wood stretcher bars and then embellished with leftover artist paints, creating this resource-conscious, eye-catching wall sculpture. This item is fully constructed from salvaged and repurposed materials, including torn canvas and textile remnants with rough, unfinished edges. The painting is unframed and ready to hang. Titled and signed on back; includes certificate of authenticity.
This is the third in a series of "Tandem" wall sculptures in which all painting is done purely with paint leftover at the end of a painting session when the artist is working on other larger original artworks. By discarding the leftover paints onto this secondary "reconstructed" canvas, the artist prevents the unnecessary disposal or waste of resources and minimizes the environmental footprint of her studio practice.
The production of art unfortunately includes the potential for a fair amount of waste. Inspired by the wine industry where second labels enable greater consumption of harvested grapes, the artist produces an entire line of artworks called “Seconds” which she creates using by-products from her primary studio practice. Borne of a desire to minimize waste ending up in landfills or water supplies, materials like abandoned paintings, leftover paint, fabric remnants, and used dropcloths are productively repurposed into “second-level” paintings that are visually distinct from the artist's primary originals and allow a prized opportunity for creative experimentation and development.
About the artist...
Stacey Warnix is an American lyrical abstraction painter who uses gestural methods to create large-scale paintings, layering mixed media pigments and collage over raw textiles. Her paintings explore the experiential affect of nuanced color and scale, using disparate materials and layered textures to subtly shift the perception, light reflectivity, and luminosity of her landscape-inspired color. less
