Sculpture “Composition in red” Alex Morlotez, 2015 – Contemporary art
Extraordinary sculpture in assembled and polychrome wood signed by Alex Morlotez, in 2015. In an abstract way, it is composed of several geometric pieces of beech wood joined together, some of them painted in red. It sits on a square wooden base that provides stability. Wood is a traditional material in sculpture, but when used to create geometric and abstract forms it appeals to the conceptual, which is then mixed with the organic nature of the support. Furthermore, the application of paint introduces a dialogue between the natural and the artificial, where painted and unpainted surfaces interact visually.
The sculpture is composed of angular geometric shapes that come together to create a dynamic structure. These can suggest movement and tension, and the way they are assembled can lead the viewer to reflect on balance and stability. The sculpture plays with negative and positive space, using the voids between shapes to create a feeling of lightness and fluidity. This geometry and simplification of forms suggest an influence of Constructivism and abstract art of the 20th century.
Alex Morlotez (1961) is a contemporary sculptor known for his work in creating sculptures and other artistic practices. Born and trained in the Basque Country, he studied at the University of the Basque Country (UPV) and in various art schools and workshops in Europe, including a Luigi Corsanini laboratory in Carrara, Italy, and workshops with ceramists such as María Medicci. His work is characterized by a mix of materials and techniques, exploring everything from wood sculpture to ironic installations that seek to reveal the wonderful in everyday life and propose new points of view on daily reality. Morlotez has worked in various disciplines, from constructivist sculpture to designer furniture and decorative objects. Additionally, she has collaborated with other artists and artisans, which has enriched her multidisciplinary approach and her ability to create pieces that are both aesthetically striking and culturally significant.
