Silk velvet from the 19th century has worn in several areas. Frames are in good, sturdy condition. At some point, small L brackets were installed under the seats against the legs to provide extra support. Fringe trim around seats has mostly fallen away. Wood finish shows beautiful signs of age to be expected with worn areas to the trim. The only area of notable damage to the frames is on the back right leg of "his" chair where some chipping/decay has occurred. One nailhead is missing from each chair. Overall, these chairs are beautifully rustic representations of very late renaissance/early baroque chair making and textile craft. They can be displayed as an art piece in their existing condition, or can be reupholstered for use. Please see photos and inspect for details. less

A pair of 17th century his/hers chairs of Italian or Spanish origin. Signed by two different makers and with slightly different details mimicking each other. It appears that "his" chair is slightly older and that "her" chair was crafted by a different maker to compliment it. Additional support for this argument is offered by "her" chair featuring a makers mark and separately three initials surrounded by a heart indicating that they were created in celebration of a marriage.
A fabric specialist has noted that the embroidery panels on the backs of each chair and around the base of "his" chair are most likely original 17th century hand embroidery and feature fabulous metallic elements. The chairs were reupholstered in the 19th century using elements of the original embroidery paired with new red silk velvet upholstery.
These are incredible display pieces to incorporate into your design and represent over 325+ of history and craftsmanship.
