Antique botanical prints are a lovely way to bring old antiques into your home at affordable prices. Many Weinmann engravings were printed in color and finished by hand 300 years ago!
This 18th Century fern, ca 1737 - 1745, is a Weinmann of German origin. Johann Wilhelm Weinmann is well known for his plates from Phytanthoza Iconographia, mezzotint engravings printed in color and finished by hand. Background as an apothecary is evident in the composition and style of the prints. Mezzotint allows for subtle tonal variations of leaves and flower petals.
