This style of grandfather clock comes from the German speaking regions of Pennsylvania. The clock movements and dials were typically made in the Black Forest of Germany and were brought over by German immigrants. The cases were then made in the Pennsylvania countryside.
This clock has a nice New England style cherrywood case and hand painted dial.
The original clock movement was noted to have been removed during the early 1900s. This was typical as the original movements utilized wooden gears and broke easily. The movement was replaced by an 8 day time/strike movement made by Lorenz Furtwängler & Sohne.
This clock is noted to have once belonged to writer, Margaret Lee Chadwick and her husband, Commander Joseph Chadwick. They are known for founding the Chadwick School, an independent K-12 day school in 1935. The clock was re-discovered in the 1980s in the Cellar of the Chadwick School in Palos Verdes, California.
This clock is in overall good condition. The movement was last serviced in 2019. It ran and chimed when recently tested.
