Charles Clément Calderon, French, was born in Paris, 1870 and trained under academic master Cabanet. Infatuated with Venice, he spent most of his career specializing and capturing views of the famous Venetian harbor. A skilled painter with an exceptionally cheerful palette, Calderon’s career was cut short due to early demise, thus, a limited body of work. His Salon debut was in 1906. His work is well regarded by the art market and prices for his best Venetian scenes continue to increase. In his paintings, Calderon romanticized Venetian Harbor scenes; Sailboats in Venice is rather untypical. Clustered in a bay, the sails burst into color while historical Venice Harbor is secondarily in the background and hinting to the much-loved location.

Comparable works of similar scenes have traded at auction above $25,000. More recent results showing similar scenes selling in the $12,000 range. That said, this one happens to be particularly good example and a costly, gilded hand carved frame is included.
