Based on similar items, such as engravings by Thomas Gaugain and William Ensom, these artworks especially of Shakespearean characters, were popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. The frame, made of walnut, enhances its vintage appeal. Imogen (also spelled Innogen) is the daughter of King Cymbeline in Shakespeare's play Cymbeline. She was described by William Hazlitt as "perhaps the most tender and the most artless" of all Shakespeare's women. Frame and portrait is in good condition with a half torn note on the back of the portrait.
