Sheet dimensions: 27.75 x 21.25 inches.
A substantial and vibrant hand-colored aquatint by this French Post Impressionist master who exhibited widely and with success including at the Venice Biennale and the Bienal de Sao Paulo. Fiorini's work can be found in the permanent collections of national museums including the Art Institute of Chicago and Stockholm's Modern Art Museum.
Born in Algeria, Marcel Fiorini first studied art at the Lycee de Bone before attending the Ecole des Beaux-Arts d'Alger (1940-1942). In 1947, Fiorini settled in Paris where he established a studio and met Jean Fautrier, who mentored him in etching. Shortly thereafter his art was promoted by the scholar and writer, Roger Chastel. In Paris, Fiorini exhibited with success including at the Galerie Jeane Bucher (1951-1980), Maison de lar Pensee Francaise and the Galerie Charpentier, the Salon d'Octobre, the Salon des Jeunes Peintres, Salon d'Automne, Salon de Mai, Salon Réalités Nouvelles (from 1948).
During the early 1950's Marcel Fiorini concentrated almost solely upon intaglio printmaking techniques, primarily aquatinting and engraving. After this time, however, he began experimenting with large linoleum cuts, sometimes in concert with the above techniques. His graphic art is widely known for its strong, sculptural forms and challenging printing techniques.
