Vintage chrome and glass cube ceiling light or wall sconce by Italian Gaetano Sciolari Gaetano Sciolari made between 1968-70. Even today, these command thousands of dollars for fixtures even in worn or refinished condition. This fixture is PRISTINE like it was made today, with no flaws. It was acquired from a large custom modern style ranch home built in 1970 on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan during a recent remodel by the new owners.
This is considered a high end functional art piece, not just a light fixture, created by the esteemed Italian designer Angelo Gaetano Sciolari, who became widely popular in the United States during the postwar years and strongly influenced lighting makers around the world. The sculptural forms and striking geometric details of his vintage floor lamps, chandeliers and other fixtures fit seamlessly into the mid-century modern and Hollywood Regency interiors of his time. Sciolari’s dynamic design consists of contrasting curvilinear and geometric forms has a timeless appeal, offering a sensibility that is just as modern and desirable now as when it was created some fifty years ago.
It features four thick translucent glass cubed shades with a recess for inset bulbs individually hand crafted by master glass blowers in Italy (likely Murano) that have a slight greenish hue at certain angles. They are attached to a chrome backplate via screw nuts, and include the original cork washers that separate and cushion cubes.
There are no chips or breaks to the glass or scratches or rust on the chrome plate. This is a hardwired fixture & attaches to a ceiling or wall electrical junction box, and intended to be used as a flush mount ceiling fixture. It can be used as a sconce, although the cubes may rotate due to their weight so take caution if doing so.
This fixture accommodates four candelabra based bulbs, is hardwired & attaches to a ceiling or wall electrical junction box. It does not come with the original backplate, which wasn’t used when installed and likely discarded. It worked perfectly when removed and also taken to an electrician for testing.
Chrome base: Approximately 10" square x 1" high, and each glass cube is 3 1/4" square x 2 5/16" high. less
