A large whimsical hand-carved wooden grasshopper with painted brass legs and wire antennae, produced in Spain in the 1970s for importer Sarreid Ltd.
In 1967, Alex Sarratt and Walter Reid traveled to Spain with a dream of seeking out and purchasing antiquities to bring back to the US. What they found instead was a whole world of rare treasures created by artisans using methods and techniques that had been passed down for hundreds of years. The products they found were not antiques but made in antique ways. A new idea was born and, with it, a new company.
Before they even had a name, Sarratt and Reid selected a winged bull as their logo, inspired by a Horizon magazine cover from 1963. Since they were working exclusively in Spain at the time, and the bull was a potent symbol in Spanish culture, it was the perfect connection. The bull represents pride and strength, while the wings represent aspiration and freedom. They named their new company 'Sarried' (a portmanteau of their last names), and from there, Sarreid Ltd was born!
The new company started by sourcing materials from Spain and Italy and bringing the exceptional talents of European wood carvers, sculptors, and painters to the forefront of American home decor. Its early products were animal-inspired decorative objects. Over time, the company expanded into side tables, coffee tables, and its signature brass chests of drawers.
On offer were appealing design alternatives to Americans interested in owning imported and more traditional luxury goods. During the company's expansion into Italy in the 1970s, Sarreid Ltd. produced its best-known furniture: the Brass Clad collection. This range of cabinets, trunks, and nightstands is still highly coveted by collectors for their complete, solid brass coating, right down to the latches and nail heads.
Unique accessories and accent furniture were imported from all over the world. Products such as hand-blown glass and hand-painted carvings from Italy, fine leather boxes from Korea, and sand-cast brass from Spain were brought in, each with a romantic story of how it was created. Sarreid kept growing from there, adding more and more products and broadening its reach and popularity. Today, all you have to do is search "Vintage Sarreid Ltd." to see hundreds of thousands of items whose value still stands and continues to grow. There are even a few TikTok videos on how to look out for Sarreid when thrifting!
Sarreid Ltd. later relocated to its current operations center in Wilson, North Carolina, where it continues to expand its reach globally, including Mexico, Thailand, and China. As one of the first furniture companies to source materials from China, Sarreid Ltd. has explored many foreign domains ahead of most major manufacturers.
The founders sold Sarreid Ltd. in 1985, but Sarratt repurchased it five years later with businessmen Charles Hoffman and Charles Mauze. Today, the company continues to produce high-quality, handcrafted furniture from all over the world.
