As we typically do with pieces from this era, we opted to finish the chairs without stain, allowing the wood to project its natural color. Some imperfections remain following the refinish (eg, wood adjacent to the reed splines that hold the cane in place was damaged on two chairs during the 2019 recaning). Several joints have been reinforced with dowels or pins, which have been concealed from view and are not noticeable except on close inspection. Close-up photos can be provided on request. Seven of eight chairs in the set retain the original manufacturer's placard, affixed to the underside of the seat. less

A fantastic, rare, and fully restored set of eight cane back dining chairs by Jens Risom for J.O. Carlssons Mobelindustri, made in Sweden in the 1950s. This chair presents as a refined version of the Model 666, which dates back to 1941. Relative to the 666 chair, Risom’s design for J.O. Carlsson has softer edges, sleeker tapers, and a cane back.
Differences aside, people familiar with both designs will recognize they came from the mind of the one and only Jens Risom.
This set has been in the same family since its original purchase in the 1950s. It was reupholstered and recaned in late 2019, and subsequently put into storage almost immediately. Based on the initial color, we assumed these chairs were made of European walnut. As we began the refinishing process, we discovered solid beechwood frames, and updated the fabric to match (Calais Sahara from Thibaut). The webbing, foam, and cane are in excellent condition, having hardly been used since replacement. less
