"Variant" serigraph by Josef Albers from the monumental "Formulation : Articulation" published by Harry N. Abrams and Ives-Sillman in 1972. This double portfolio edition of 1000 provides the most comprehensive overview of Josef Albers' oeuvre. Albers' signature appears on the title page of Portfolio I, but the individual prints are unsigned. Printed on Mohawk Superfine paper in mostly two-sided "Folders". Each print from a Folder's right side is dry-stamped and hand-numbered indicating the Portfolio (I or II) and Folder (1 thru 33), plus copyright, while those from a Folder's left side are marked "JOSEPH ALBERS FORMULATION : ARTICULATION". The total sheet size is 15 x 20 inches, and the serigraph size is 8-3/4 x 16-1/4 inches.

Born 1888 in Bottrop, Germany, Josef Albers is considered one of the most influential artists and teacher of visual arts of the 20th Century. Although Albers had studied painting, it was as a maker of stained glass that he joined the faculty of the Bauhaus in 1922, approaching this medium as a component of architecture and as an art form. After the Nazis came to power, Albers and his wife Anni, moved to the United States where he became head of Black Mountain College's Art Department from 1933 until 1950, when Albers left to head Yale University's Department of Design. There, his students included Richard Anuszkiewicz, John Chamberlain, Eva Hesse, Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, and Sewell Sillman, who became a publisher of many Albers editions. His works on paper include "Interaction of Color" (1963), "Homage to the Square" (various years), "Ten Variants" (1967), and "Formulation: Articulation" (1972). Hudson-John Gallery has Albers prints from all these editions. less
