Beautiful Embroidered Asian Needlecraft Art on a Twilled Linen Panel. The thread used is "crewel wool". The handiwork is excellent & the colors are vibrant to this day. One of my favorite finds at an estate sale of a prolific needlecrafter.
The design & panel came from the 1936 Stitchcraft Magazine from which you could purchase this ready-to-embroider, likely hand-traced, panel directly or through your "usual needlework shop". The stitch instructions, thread brand & colors were specified in the magazine but not part of the purchase.
The design feels to me to be Hiroshige inspired, but as you'll read in the magazine, the author indicates it was inspired "by an old Chinese print".
The panel in the magazine is shown finished as a fireplace screen, but noted that it could be used "simply as a wall hanging".
I purchased a digital download of the original magazine posting and have included in the photos ~ indicated with "Stitchcraft" at the top and the page number at the bottom.
The design measures 18" x 26", the panel measures 25" x 31" less
