They are cast iron with … Read more Very interesting pair of andirons, features the shape of marching Hessian soldiers holding their sabers. They are cast iron with colored accents, they are stamped with mark, patent number on reverse.

The first documented examples of this form date from 1826 to the the 50th anniversary of the American Revolution. The majority of the examples with color date from the post-Civil War period of 1870-1910.
