Vintage danish mid century 1960’s model 3330 arne vodder 3 seat sofa for fritz hansen in recently reupholstered dark chocolate coloured leather.
arne vodder was one of the greats of danish mid century modern design and was renowned as a furniture designer who specialised in beautifully constructed tables, chairs, desks and sideboards. Whilst he did also design a number of sofas most feature a wooden frame and loose cushions making his fully upholstered sofa designs very rare indeed – in fact there are really only a handful to speak of; the av53 designed for ivan schlecter in the 1950s, the av59 and 65 produced by nielaus and then finally, this model, the 3330, designed for fritz hansen in the 1960’s. None of these, however, were produced in large numbers which naturally makes them more sought after.
as always vodder’s attention to detail is what makes his designs stand out; in particular we can see this in the top end side panels that add an accent to side of the top cushions and the sweep of the arm that echoes the curves you will find in many of his other furniture designs.
originals were produced in a range of fabrics and leathers and this sofa has been reupholstered in recent times in a stunning fine grained, dark chocolate leather; it is therefore in excellent condition with just a few very minor marks here and there. It’s a very comfortable sofa as it benefits from having a sprung base which is further enhanced with a foam and fleece interlay. It’s also been cleverly designed so that it can easily be taken apart to enable it to be placed in areas where you might not usually be able to get a large sofa because of height or width restrictions in a hall or doorway; the back is simply fixed by 5 long screws through the base and each arm rotates on a fitting and then locks into place with two bolts on each side.
