A fine example of incredible craftsmanship of a bygone era and full of historical importance. John Jacob Astor III Headstone from Newport Chetwode Mansion This hand carved French sandstone sculpture of Summer Goddess of the four seasons, was commissioned by famous Philadelphia Architect Horace Trumbauer for Mrs. William Storrs Wells of New York for her new lavish Louis VI style Newport chateau built in 1903 on Belleview Avenue. It was considered one of the finest mansions in Newport.
Most notably it was purchased by 21 year old John Jacob Astor III, the son of John Jacob Astor IV, who was the richest person to drown on the ill fated Titanic.
The château was devastated in a fire in 1972 and raised in 1973, where the Tunney’s , owners of Belcourt Castle, rescued several architectural items.
