This is a super unusual telephone stand or table designed in the chinoiserie style. The piece is unmarked but was likely made in the United States in the 1930s. It was originally intended to house a telephone, including a hole in the back for the cord and a compartment to hold a pen and paper.
Today, in the year of our lord 2024, this antique telephone stand could still be used for phones! It would make a great charging station for phones, tablets, and other devices. It could be placed in a small entry way to hold keys or mail. It's a charming piece with lots of interesting possibilities.
The solid wood stand has a pagoda shaped upper cabinet with a peaked roof, turned pediments, and a paint decorated door with a wooden knob. The door opens to reveal a storage space with a round hole in the back, which can be accessed by the swinging panel. The pagoda cabinet sits on a flat writing surface has a shaped wood gallery in the back. Below the writing surface is an open storage compartment above an ornate trestle style base.
The cabinet retains its original finish with the crackled black laquer on the pagoda cabinet and crackled red lacquer on the writing surface and base. The cabinet door has a hand painted Asian scene.
The circa 1930s telephone stand is in good antique condition. It's a solid, well made piece that shows well, but it does have some wear, including some small pieces of missing veneer on the base, a circle of paint loss on the pagoda roof, and some age-appropriate wear and tear throughout. Please see photos for more details about condition.
The piece measures 49" tall, 19" wide, and 14.5" deep. The interior of the pagoda cabinet measures 11.75" tall and 7.75" wide. The peaked roof adds some additional height inside.
