A highly detailed, panoramic view of Venice's Canareggio canal showing numerous boats and gondolas moving between the ancient buildings. The artist combines the soft golden light of Canaletto with the intense, almost flame-like figures of Francesco Guardi. Gotz also shows deft and delicate handling in the tracery of the gothic building facades and in the gravitas of the great dome of Santa Maria della Salute.
This Berlin artist was largely self-taught and was forbidden by the National Socialist government to paint or exhibit from allmann is well listed in the Vollmer supplement to Thieme-Becker and his work may be found in the permanent collection of the Luxemburg State museum.
