Henri Louis Scott was born in 1846, Havre France (Normandy). Largely known for landscape paintings, he was also a master at capturing everyday life around the docks, maritime activities and seascapes. One of Scott’s favorite subjects was the sea and its moody storms of the Normandy coastline. In this work, 'Out to Sea', Scott’s atmospheric sky meets the rising sun; capturing the casual yet hectic routine of fisherman heading to sea. Scott’s first exhibition was in 1872 with subsequent participation in the important Parisian shows. The coloration of this work is strikingly dramatic and is even more beautiful in person.

It was exhibited at the Paris Salon, 1882 (no. 2440). Literature includes, F.G. Dumas, Catalogue Illustrate du Salon, Paris 1882 and Bashet, ed "L'Exposition des Beaux-Arts" (Salon de 1882) P. 238 and also, "Guide Critique du Salon de 1882". Acquired from Sotheby's in 2008 and held in a private collection since that time. Add'l info upon request.

The original materials are stable and there is no flaking or cleavage … moreOverall, very good condition with age appropriate wear. The original materials are stable and there is no flaking or cleavage of the paint layer. The impasto is intact. The canvas support is in an extremely good state of preservation for a painting of this date. It has not been lined and remains attached to the original stretcher with keys in place. There are random small losses to the paint layer, due to frame abrasion, along the edges of the composition. These areas have been retouched and are visible under ultra-violet light. In the background, to the left of the tail of the cart, there are a few very tiny retouchings, also only visible in ultra-violet light. The surface is covered by a slightly shiny, slightly discolored varnish. The painting was examined in the frame, front and back under ambient, ultra-violet and LED light with magnification, at the premises of the NY gallery where the work is currently on view. Although in overall very good condition, the buyer may wish to refresh the varnish. This is an option best left to the discretion of the buyer. less
